22-year-old drunk driver hits woman standing on sidewalk
According to New Jersey police, a 22-year-old drunk driver swerved off the road and struck a 28-year-old woman standing on a sidewalk. After that, he crashed his car into a light post, tree and utility pole. The incident happened on Thursday evening.
The woman was taken to the Hackensack University Medical Center and is still in life-threatening condition. Bergen County prosecutor’s office said that around 7:45 p.m., the woman was standing on the sidewalk near St. Mary’s High School in East Rutherford when the driver of a 2006 Lexus Sedan lost control and struck her. After that, he knocked down a tree, a street light and a wooden utility pole.
Prosecutors said the Sedan’s driver, Victor Kwak, was taken into custody and is charged with aggravated assault by auto, DWI within 1,000 feet of a school and several other moving violations including DWI and reckless driving.
According to the officers, Kawk was driving under the influence and his blood sample was taken for testing. He is being held at Bergen County Jail on $75,000 bail.
Kwak’s first court appearance at the East Rutherford Municipal Court is scheduled for 4th of September. It is not confirmed if he has a lawyer.
