71-year-old Matthew V. Scannapieco, who was a New Jersey mayor, was charged for raping a girl and now he is awaiting sentencing in Delaware.
From 1992 to 2003, Scannapieco was the mayor of Marlboro, New Jersey. Court documents showed that the sexual abuse started after Scannapieco shifted to Middletown in the year 2005 and ended when he was locked up in federal prison on corruption charges in the year 2008. It was revealed that he was involved in the sexual abuse for 3 years. He was released from prison after 2 years in 2010, after which he got involved in the same sexual abuse case once, revealed the sex abuse case documents.
The case of child sexual abuse was opened when a girl, who was the victim, told her mother in 2014 about what happened with her when she was too young after which the former mayor was charged.
He began raping the girl when she was just 6-year-old for which he was taken into custody on 19th of August 2014.
His sentencing was scheduled for 4th of September as he was charged with second-degree rape, first-degree sexual contact, and continuous sexual abuse of a child.
In the month of May, he pleaded guilty and according to the deal he cannot ask to serve the jail for less than fifteen years and prosecutors cannot ask the judge to sentence him to serve jail for more than twenty five years.
Scannapieco’s lawyer, T. Andrew Rosen, told that the judge who is handling the case can impose any sentence from 12 to 58 years.
The court documents also showed that in his last few years of duty as mayor, he took bribes amounting to $245,000, from a developer.
Rosen added, Scannapieco shifted to Delaware “in the hope of getting a fresh start”.
Rosen also told, “He is disgusted with himself”. According to him, Scannapieco is not suspected of any other abuse and no video of child pornography was found in his home. It is also confirmed that he was not involved in any other case of sexual abuse. Until Scannapieco was charged and taken into custody in the corruption case, he had been a highly regarded individual. Rosen added, “Nobody can tell you how you get from that point to what happened here”.
