Frequently Stolen Items in New Jersey
Experienced New Jersey Shoplifting Lawyer Discusses Most Frequently Stolen Items
In New Jersey we have two or three different types of shoplifters that go into the malls. There are the people who go into those stores and attempt to shoplift costume jewelry, belts, clothes, sunglasses, one item at a time or going around the store and filling up a bag with many stolen items.
Then there’s the other type of shoplifting cases that are very common in New Jersey. This is where people go into Shop Rite or Pathmark, and they’re stealing food. Then there’s the other type and they are stealing items, such as hand cream, diapers, baby formula, Advil and other types of lotions. Those types of items are very commonly shoplifted in those food-types of stores.

There Is No “One Kind” of Person Charged With Shoplifting
The one thing about shoplifting, is that it is broadly based. There are a segment of people that are on the young side, under 18-years-old that would go over to the county juvenile court, which are the types of cases that we handle. In those instances the charges usually stem from kind of like a dare, a thrill, or just simply bad judgment.
Then you encounter people who are stealing from the drugstores and the supermarkets in an effort to resell formula, lotions, diapers, and things like that, and that’s more of a person who’s actually trying to create income, not using the item.
“Impulse” Shoplifting
Then there’s a very large segment of the population that goes into a store with either no intention or very little intention of taking anything, and on an impulse, they wound up with something in their bag or something in their cart that they know they put there. In those cases, they really don’t know why they wound up stealing it; it’s kind of an impulse.
New Jersey shoplifting lawyer Carl Spector has handled many cases where the person doesn’t have any prior criminal record and they’re not even sure themselves why they tried to take the item. Most of the time, they have the money for the item in their pocketbook or in their pocket, but for some reason, they’ve attempted to steal. The stolen items could be a pair of gloves or scarf, and that’s a very common scenario that we see.
