Combat the Natural Feeling of Helplessness after a Criminal Charge by Recognizing You Need the Help of an Experienced Defense Attorney
Carl Spector: They way to really look at it is clients in the very beginning, as we discussed earlier, are anxious and feel very helpless. They know that they can’t do this thing on their own even if they are exceptionally intelligent and they’re going to need some help. That makes them even more anxious because they’re not used to that.
Adults are used to being able to solve their problems on their own and now all of a sudden they have to turn to a person that in most cases that they don’t even know.
What Qualities Should you Look for in an Attorney? Retaining the Right Attorney Will Make It Far Easier for You to Trust This Professional with the Handling of This Crucial Matter
While I have a lot of repeat business, much of my business is comprised of new clients. These are people who I’ve never met before. Now you have a person who’s never met you before and now they have to put all these trust in you. That makes them anxious.
They’re anxious and they’re uptight. The way I think it’s best to look at it is give them some information. I always try to educate my clients. I do this even if they don’t retain me.
I give them as much information as I think they can handle so that they could start thinking about the long term and how they eventually be able to help themselves by participating in their case with the attorney.
By Keeping Clients Fully Apprised of All of the Facets of the Case, Clients Can Become Partners with the Attorneys in Building the Best Defense
If you empower people they could actually help the lawyer out by thinking about things differently than the way lawyers do. Sometimes laypeople can see the case in a helpful way. In the end your client can become a partner in the way you defend their own case.
It is Equally Important for the Attorney to Develop Good Listening Skills as It Is for the Client
In the beginning that could be difficult, but most importantly you have to listen to them. This is because the facts that they bring out are critical to any good interview with any potential client because it’s the facts that win the day because you apply those facts to the law.
I try to educate my clients to the best of my ability. I try to give them as much information I can upfront and I try to keep them involved in what’s going on in their own case. If a court date should change I let them know immediately. I don’t wait for them to get a notice in the mail.
The Right Attorney Should Be Proactive in Keeping in Touch with the Client
I don’t have them guessing about what’s going on with their case if I can avoid it. If they want to call me, they can call me, but I try to pick up the phone to them before they pick up the phone to me.
