Interviewer: Let’s go back to the emotional side of things. When people are arrested for DWI, I’m sure they’re apprehensive but have you found that they’re too scared to talk to an attorney? Is it the general impression that attorneys are intimidating? What are the reasons you think that people are afraid to even approach an attorney with this?
Carl: Well, a lot of people have not had much contact with attorneys. They don’t want to necessarily have contact with attorneys. They might feel that an attorney might intimidate them. Additionally, they might feel that an attorney’s service will not be affordable to them.
Taking Control of the Case
When you get arrested for DWI, there are really feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that you go through as the person charged. What I try to let people know is that by retaining an attorney they’ve actually taking control of their case, something that they lost when they first got pulled over.
An Attorney Is Not There to Judge You
And attorneys can be belligerent. They can be arrogant. They can be difficult to reach. They could be difficult to pin down, as far as scheduling a time to meet. And people are not excited about going into a relationship with somebody that they may perceive as being just like that.
Interviewer: You mean people even feel judged by the attorney, as well?
Carl: I think people might go through those feelings when thinking about having to pick up the phone and having to meet with an attorney, sure.
